5 Common Types of Charlatans
The world is full of charlatans. People who promise the moon and then deliver…well, nothing. Sometimes, these frauds are easy to spot. But other times, they’re so good at what they do that they manage to fool even the most skeptical among us.
The world is full of charlatans. People who promise the moon and then deliver…well, nothing. Sometimes, these frauds are easy to spot. But other times, they’re so good at what they do that they manage to fool even the most skeptical among us. Here are five of the biggest charlatans in the world—and why they’re so good at what they do.
- PsychicsPsychics have been around for centuries, preying on the vulnerable and gullible with their false promises of predicting the future. Many people want to believe that there are people out there who can commune with the dead or see into the future, so they’re willing to suspend disbelief when a psychic tells them things that could apply to just about anyone. And if a psychic happens to get lucky and say something that comes true, well, then they must be legit!
- Self-help gurusThe self-help industry is worth billions of dollars because there are so many people out there who are desperate for a quick fix to their problems. Self-help gurus prey on this desperation, promising their followers that if they just read their book/attend their seminar/ buy their product, all of their problems will magically disappear. Of course, it never works out that way—but by the time people realize they’ve been duped, the self-help guru has already moved on to his next victim.
- Miracle curesThere’s always someone peddling the latest miracle cure for whatever ailment you may have—whether it’s cancer or wrinkles or baldness. These charlatans prey on people’s fear and desperation, promising them a quick and easy solution to their problems. And if it doesn’t work? Well, then you must not have used it correctly! Never mind the fact that there is no scientific evidence to support any of these so-called cures—people want to believe that there’s a magic bullet out there somewhere, so they’re susceptible to falling for these scams.
- Get-rich-quick schemesWe all want to get rich quick, with as little effort as possible. That’s why get-rich-quick schemes are so successful—because they play on our deepest desires and wishes. These schemes promise easy money with no effort required on your part, which is obviously too good to be true. But people fall for them time and time again, hoping against hope that this time will be different and they’ll finally strike it rich. Spoiler alert: it never is.
- Climate change deniersClimate change is real, it’s happening right now, and it’s being caused by human activity. But there are still a lot of people out there who deny this fact, whether because they don’t want to believe it or because they stand to gain financially from continued environmental degradation. These climate change deniers are some of the most dangerous charlatans out there, because their lies have very real consequences for the planet and its inhabitants—including us!
